It’s my geek thing

Recently a friend was laughing about the fact that I figure out how many stitches are in a given project via spreadsheet and then compute how long knitting said project will take. I generally do this for larger projects like sweaters or shawls.I call these spreadsheets knit plans. I blamed this on my day job (bookkeeper) because deadlines are very much a part of that job. In reality, it’s my geek thing. Wikipedia defines geek as “odd or non-mainstream people, with different connotations ranging from ‘a computer expert or enthusiast’ to ‘a person heavily interested in a hobby.'” Urban dictionary says “a geek does not have to be smart, a Geek is someone who is generally not athletic, and enjoys Video Games; Comic Books; being on the internet, and etc.” I fit both definitions. I’m more math geek than computer geek but do feel a bit at odds when away from my computer. I haven’t been into comic books in years but do enjoy video games (I have to set a timer when I play these). Also most folks go to casinos to gamble, I go to play video games.

Obviously I’m heavily interested in knitting. If I’m awake and not working or eating or  doing housework–well maybe not housework, I’m knitting. So under Just (k)nits casting on today, I made a knit plan and swatched for Tea Leaves Cardigan which I plan to cast on in the next week or so. I’ll be using this sweater as my “entry” in a knit along hosted by The Knit Girllls. I swatched yesterday and calculated my stitch count (mainly to see if I could finish by June 30). I’ll be using Malabrigo Silky Merino in Teal Feather and using US size 7 and US size 6 needles. Actual cast on date is no later than June 1. I have some small projects I want to work before this one, namely turtle, TURTLE and Sam the Super Frog.

As a matter of fact Sam the Super Frog is actually a Just (k)nits in progress. I cast him on last night using US size 6 needles and GnomeAcres Squishy Gnome in Wabbit Season Duck Season. His cape will be orange Cascade 220.

I’m now beading the Evenstar. The first couple of repeats were tough because I had the stinking tinks and had to tink a couple of times. The design calls for a yarn over before a purl stitch and sometimes I forget to wrap. I think I’ve got it licked now.Originally I thought I’d only be able to work one repeat a day but now think I’ll be able to work a couple of repeats most days.2013-05-16 08.05.28

I did work on the SouthPark Wade Throw under Just (k)nits for others but didn’t take a picture. I really hope to finish this over the weekend. I’ll either cast on a baby sweater or work on a couple of Topsy Turvy toys for shut-ins.

I made another bluebird Chubby Chirp. I had some take out boxes which are perfect “wrapping” for these. Debit snatched this chirp while I was taking a picture and had to be bribed to give it up.2013-05-16 19.16.20 - Copy

Just (k)nits bound off my US size 6 needles is Gill’s Rock. This was a quick and fun knit. Quince & Co Finch is such a delight to work. I wish the texture and stitch definition showed better in the pictures. I steam blocked rather than wet blocked this piece as the designer called for light blocking.
